Google's frontier Gemini model is now subscription-only

Gemini 4 Argon went generally available on 14 October — to paying subscribers. Google's free tier is now listed as Flash-Lite only, which moves the comparison with European assistants onto pricing rather than privacy.

Google made Gemini 4 Argon generally available on 14 October 2026, roughly two weeks after announcing it. The model reaches the Gemini app and the AI mode in Google Search for Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers, and developers through the paid Gemini API in AI Studio. Introductory API pricing is two dollars per million input tokens and ten dollars per million output tokens, and Google says those rates double on 1 December.

What makes the launch worth noting is the floor underneath it. Google’s own subscriptions page now lists the free tier as “access to our Flash-Lite model” — the smallest model in the family. The $4.99 AI Plus tier adds Flash. The Pro model and Argon both begin at AI Pro, $19.99 a month. The frontier model is no longer something a free account brushes against occasionally; it is the thing the subscription is for.

That is a pricing decision rather than a privacy story, and it lands on a different axis from the one European assistants usually argue on. Mistral’s pricing FAQ states that its free plan gives “limited access to Vibe, including our latest models” — the constraint is how many messages and searches you get, not which model answers them. Mistral’s Vibe sits at $14.99 a month for Pro and $24.99 per user for Team.

None of that closes the gaps this site already records. Vibe has no Gmail or Docs sidebar, no phone-assistant role and no video generation, which is why it is rated a partial rather than a full substitute for Google Gemini. Those are real losses for someone living inside Google’s apps, and they have not changed this week.

What has changed is the other side of the comparison. The question is no longer only what a European assistant lacks against Gemini, but which Gemini a reader is actually being compared to — and for anyone not paying, that is now the smallest model Google ships.
