OX Spreadsheet
Spreadsheets Germany
Browser spreadsheet with real-time co-editing and native XLSX files. Alternative to Google Sheets and Microsoft Excel.
Details
OX Spreadsheet is the spreadsheet in OX Documents, the office component of OX App Suite from Open-Xchange in Cologne. It runs in a browser against files held in OX Drive, and reaches end users through a hosting provider — mailbox.org sells it at EUR 4 per user per month.
Workbooks are edited natively as .xlsx, with .ods and legacy .xls also supported. The grid has a formula bar, a function browser that describes each function as it is selected, named ranges usable in place of cell addresses, sort and filter, cell protection and hiding, number formats with editable format codes, cell styles and borders, merged cells, freeze and split panes, and multiple sheets as tabs. Charts are built in the sheet rather than only imported: column, line and pie types, axis labels, data-point colours, legend placement and an adjustable data source. Cells take comments, and several people can edit one workbook at once with each cursor visible to the others.
The analysis layer is where it stops. There are no pivot tables and no conditional formatting, and neither is a documented feature of any 8.x release. Data validation is absent, and so is any macro or scripting language.
That makes it a shared grid rather than a modelling tool. Formulas, charts and co-editing cover reporting and light bookkeeping; anything that summarises a long table by category has to be written out as formulas by hand.
About Open-Xchange
Open-Xchange AG was founded in 2005 and is registered in Cologne as a German public company with a supervisory board, HRB 95366. There is no US entity above it.
It sells OX App Suite — webmail, calendar, contacts, Drive and the OX Documents editors — to telcos, ISPs, hosting providers and public bodies, who run it under their own brand. The group also owns Dovecot Pro, the commercial edition of the Dovecot IMAP server, and PowerDNS.
Because OX sells to providers rather than to end users, a reader buys the suite from one of them. mailbox.org, run by Heinlein Hosting GmbH in Berlin under German law, is the German retail route: EUR 4 per user per month, a 30-day trial and self-serve signup.
