OX Text

Word Processing Germany

Browser word processor with real-time co-editing and native DOCX. Alternative to Google Docs and Microsoft Word.

Details

OX Text is the word processor in OX Documents, the office component of OX App Suite from Open-Xchange in Cologne. It runs entirely in a browser and stores files in OX Drive. OX licenses it to providers rather than selling it direct; mailbox.org carries it at EUR 4 per user per month.

Documents are edited natively as .docx, with .odt and legacy .doc also opening — .doc converts to .docx on first edit. The editor carries paragraph styles that can be created from the paragraph under the cursor, tables with table styles, headers and footers, fields for page numbers, dates and author name, page and line breaks, a generated table of contents, images, shapes and text frames, and spell checking against a per-paragraph language. An AI panel generates, rephrases, summarises and translates text, subject to how the provider configures it.

Review work holds up. Track changes can be switched on, and changes accepted or rejected one at a time or all at once. Comments can be inserted, replied to, edited and deleted, though there is no resolve action, so a settled comment has to be deleted outright. Several people edit one document at the same time, each with a coloured cursor the others can see, and OX Drive keeps versions with a “set as current version” action.

Three parts of Word have no counterpart. There are no footnotes, endnotes or citation management; there is no mail merge; and there is no macro language of any kind.

About Open-Xchange

Open-Xchange AG was founded in 2005 and is registered in Cologne as a German public company with a supervisory board, HRB 95366. There is no US entity above it.

It sells OX App Suite — webmail, calendar, contacts, Drive and the OX Documents editors — to telcos, ISPs, hosting providers and public bodies, who run it under their own brand. The group also owns Dovecot Pro, the commercial edition of the Dovecot IMAP server, and PowerDNS.

Because OX sells to providers rather than to end users, a reader buys the suite from one of them. mailbox.org, run by Heinlein Hosting GmbH in Berlin under German law, is the German retail route: EUR 4 per user per month, a 30-day trial and self-serve signup.
