Scaleway Object Storage
Object Storage France
S3 buckets in four EU regions with Multi-AZ and cold archive tiers. Alternative to Amazon S3.
Details
Scaleway Object Storage is an S3-compatible object store from the French provider Scaleway, part of the Iliad group. Because it implements the S3 API, existing clients, SDKs and backup tools point at it by changing an endpoint rather than rewriting code. Three storage classes — Standard Multi-AZ, Standard One Zone and Glacier — cover hot through archival, with granular lifecycle rules to move objects into cold storage, plus bucket versioning, object lock and multipart upload up to 5 TB per object.
The commercial case rests on what is not billed: Scaleway charges no request fees, where S3 meters PUT, GET and LIST operations separately from storage. New accounts get 750 GB-hours free for 90 days.
What you give up is breadth rather than function. S3 carries more storage tiers, a global region footprint and deep wiring into the rest of AWS — Lambda event notifications, Athena queries, CloudFront origins — none of which has a direct counterpart here. For storing and serving objects, the API is the same; for an application built on the AWS services around S3, the storage is the easy part.
