European alternatives to Bitwarden

Bitwarden is a password manager whose free plan carries unlimited passwords on unlimited devices, with browser extensions, desktop and mobile apps, passkey management, storage for notes, cards and identities, a generator, encrypted export, Bitwarden Send, and sharing with one other user. That free tier, plus an open-source server anyone can run on their own hardware, is why it is the default recommendation in most “get off LastPass” threads.

What it charges for is narrow. Premium at USD 1.65 a month adds the integrated TOTP authenticator, file attachments, emergency access and security reports; Families is USD 3.99 for six people. On the business side, Teams at USD 4 per user adds event logs, directory sync and SCIM, and Enterprise at USD 6 adds granular access control, passwordless SSO, enterprise policies and the supported self-hosting path.

On 9 October 2026 Bitwarden announced that the builds it publishes to the app stores would become its commercially licensed builds. The GPLv3 build continues on GitHub, the code stays publicly auditable and forkable, self-hosting is unchanged, and the company restated that the free plan is permanent — but the move is the kind of licence drift that sends people looking for a European-governed vault.
