European alternatives to Google Gemini

Google Gemini is Google’s conversational assistant, developed by Google DeepMind and operated by Google LLC, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc. It launched as Bard on 21 March 2023 and was rebranded Gemini on 8 February 2024.

What separates it from a standalone chat product is distribution. Gemini is not something most people go to; it is something they arrive at, through Android, Chrome, Photos and Google Workspace, where it answers inside Gmail, Docs and Drive over the user’s own files. That makes the question for a European reader less “is there a better assistant” and more “how do I get out of the one already embedded in my email”.

There is a free consumer tier, with additional capability sold through Google’s AI subscription plans. It is available in dozens of languages across most countries.
