European alternatives to Mailchimp Transactional Email

Mailchimp Transactional Email is the service formerly sold as Mandrill: an API and SMTP relay for the messages an application sends to one person at a time — password resets, receipts, shipping notifications — as distinct from the newsletters Mailchimp is known for. It carries templates, merge tags, webhooks for opens, bounces and spam complaints, and per-message metadata you can search months later.

Two things make it awkward. The first is commercial: it is not sold on its own. Transactional is an add-on bought in blocks of credits on top of a paid Mailchimp Standard or Premium plan, so the cost of sending receipts is tied to a marketing subscription you may not otherwise want. The second is reputational: deliverability depends on sending-domain authentication and a warmed IP history that does not transfer, so a migration means re-authenticating DKIM and SPF and rebuilding reputation at the new provider while watching inbox placement.

Mailchimp is owned by Intuit Inc., US-headquartered in Mountain View, California. The European alternatives below sell transactional sending as a product in its own right rather than as an add-on, under EU jurisdiction.
