European alternatives to VMware vSphere
VMware vSphere pairs the ESXi bare-metal hypervisor with vCenter Server for central management, vMotion live migration, DRS load balancing and HA failover across clustered hosts. It has been the default enterprise virtualization platform for two decades.
Broadcom completed its acquisition of VMware on 22 November 2023 and repackaged the portfolio within weeks. Hundreds of SKUs collapsed into a handful of bundles, principally vSphere Foundation and the larger VMware Cloud Foundation; perpetual licences were discontinued in favour of subscription, and maintenance renewals on existing perpetual licences ended, so a perpetual licence without an active support contract receives no updates or security patches. Licensing also moved to per-core with a 16-core-per-CPU floor; a 72-core-per-order minimum communicated to partners in April 2025 was withdrawn after reseller pushback. Broadcom publishes no universal price list, so renewal costs are negotiated per account.
The free ESXi edition was withdrawn in February 2024 and restored in April 2025 as ESXi 8.0 Update 3e, but it cannot be joined to vCenter — so the free tier is a single unmanaged host rather than a managed cluster. vSphere 8 is the last perpetually licensable version and reaches end of general support on 11 October 2027; vSphere 9 is subscription-only inside VMware Cloud Foundation.
