US password manager built on an open-source server you can self-host.

Bitwarden is a credential-management company founded in 2016 by Kyle Spearrin. Its binding Terms of Service name 8bit Solutions LLC as the contracting party and state that “Bitwarden Inc. is incorporated in the State of Delaware in the United States of America”, with the agreement governed by federal US law and the laws of California and exclusive venue in California. The company raised a USD 100M round led by PSG in 2022 and is headquartered in Santa Barbara.

Its position in the market rests on two things most competitors do not combine: a free hosted tier with unlimited passwords and unlimited devices, and a server you can run yourself. On 9 October 2026 Bitwarden said the builds it publishes to the app stores would switch to its commercially licensed build, while the GPLv3 build continues to be published on GitHub, nothing moved closed source, and self-hosting was unaffected.
