LimeSurvey is an open-source survey tool first released in 2003 and developed by LimeSurvey GmbH in Hamburg. It is built for research rather than quick polls: branching and piping, quotas, assessments, surveys in more than 80 languages, panel redirects through URL parameters, exports to SPSS, R and Stata, and a RemoteControl API. The Community Edition is GPL-licensed and free to self-host at any scale. LimeSurvey Cloud stores each customer’s data in one region, with Germany and Finland recommended for EU customers; its free plan allows 25 responses a month, and paid plans are priced by response volume. There is no respondent panel to buy, which is what SurveyMonkey sells on top of its survey tool.
About LimeSurvey
LimeSurvey GmbH is the Hamburg company that develops LimeSurvey, an open-source survey tool whose first release dates to 2003. The GmbH was registered in 2015 (Amtsgericht Hamburg, HRB 137625) and took over its founder Carsten Schmitz’s sole-trader business the same year; Schmitz and Jory Nagel are its managing directors. The register shows two shareholders and no parent company above it. Its general terms name LimeSurvey GmbH as the provider and are governed by German law, and its filed accounts show a profit in every year from 2020 to 2024.
