Mojeek

Web Search United Kingdom

Web search on an independent British crawler and index, no tracking. Alternative to Google Search.

Details

Mojeek is a web search engine that returns results from an index it built itself. It has run its own crawler since 2004 and reached nine billion indexed pages in 2025. That makes it an unusual thing in Europe: every other European-branded search engine is, to some degree, a front end over Google’s or Microsoft’s results, and Mojeek has no fallback to either in any market.

The privacy position follows from the same independence. There are no accounts, no tracking cookies and no IP logging, and the company says it outsources no development. Revenue comes from contextual advertising keyed to the query and from a paid search API, so the search page itself is not the product being sold.

What a reader gives up is breadth. Nine billion pages is one to two orders of magnitude smaller than Google’s index, so navigational queries and site-scoped keyword searches land well while hard long-tail questions often do not. Image search is supplied by Openverse and covers only openly-licensed material rather than the general web, and there is no video, maps, local, shopping or flight search at all. Mojeek also has no AI answer layer and has said publicly that it does not intend to build one — a deliberate position rather than a gap it is working on, and one some readers will count as the point.

About Mojeek

Mojeek Limited is registered in England and Wales under company number 06918197, incorporated on 28 May 2009, and operates from the Sussex Innovation Centre at the University of Sussex in Brighton. Its terms name the company directly and are governed by English law with exclusive jurisdiction in the courts of England and Wales; no United States or Delaware entity appears anywhere in its terms or privacy policy.

The company is controlled by one person with significant control, Marc Smith, a British natural person holding more than half the voting rights, with no corporate shareholder above him. It has filed accounts every year since incorporation and reported six employees in each of the last five years. Those accounts are small-entity and filleted, so no profit-and-loss statement is published and revenue is not disclosed; what they do show is a company funded by regular share issues — roughly £391,000 of new share premium in the year to May 2025 — against a loss that has narrowed three years running, from £635,000 to £399,000.

Mojeek’s distinguishing claim is technical rather than corporate. It has crawled the web with its own robot since 2004 and reached an index of nine billion pages in 2025, which makes it one of very few search engines anywhere, and the only one in Europe, that returns results from an index it built itself rather than reselling Google’s or Microsoft’s. It states that it does not track users, log IP addresses or outsource development, and earns revenue from contextual advertising and a paid search API rather than from the people searching.
