European alternatives to Adobe Illustrator

Illustrator is the vector drawing application most of the design industry is trained on. It draws and edits Bezier paths, converts type to outlines, works in CMYK with spot colours, produces press-ready PDF/X, and exports SVG, EPS and AI. Its file format is the interchange currency of the trade: a printer, an agency or a freelancer will ask for an .ai or a PDF written by Illustrator, and anything that cannot read or write one cleanly creates work at the handover.

There is no free tier and no perpetual licence. Illustrator costs USD 22.99 a month as a single app on an annual commitment, or USD 37.99 per seat on the teams plan, after a seven-day trial. That matters for the comparison here: where an incumbent gives its product away, a paid European peer is capped at the halfway mark on cost alone — Illustrator does not, so a peer is judged on capability.

What keeps people on it is less the drawing than the surroundings: Creative Cloud Libraries shared with Photoshop and InDesign, Adobe Stock and Adobe Fonts in the same subscription, a plug-in ecosystem built over three decades, and the fact that whoever receives the file already has the application open. Adobe Inc. is a Delaware corporation headquartered in San Jose.
