NetBird
Mesh VPN Germany
German open-source mesh VPN on WireGuard, hosted or self-hosted. Alternative to Tailscale.
Details
NetBird connects laptops, phones and servers into a private network over WireGuard. Peers find each other through NAT traversal and talk directly, with relays as a fallback. It has clients for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android, plus routers and NAS devices. Users sign in through an identity provider, and an admin console manages access policies, private DNS, network routes, exit nodes and built-in SSH.
The hosted service is free for up to 5 users and 100 machines, with Team at EUR 6 and Business at EUR 12 per user a month. Its application hosting runs on AWS servers in the EU/EEA, but sign-in to the cloud service goes through Auth0, a US provider. The client is BSD-3 licensed. The management, signal and relay servers are AGPLv3, so a team can run the whole stack itself.
About NetBird
NetBird GmbH is a Berlin company (Amtsgericht Charlottenburg, HRB 237529 B), registered in 2022 as Wiretrustee UG and run by its co-founders Mikhail Bragin and Maycon Santos. It builds an open-source mesh VPN on WireGuard and sells a hosted version, whose terms are under German law and whose application hosting runs on servers in the EU/EEA. The German federal StartUp Secure programme funded its zero-trust mesh research in 2023. A EUR 8.5 million Series A in January 2026 was led by Pace Capital, a US fund, with Nauta, InReach and Antler; the capital increase registered in December 2025 added about a quarter of the share capital, and no parent company sits above the GmbH.
