Wero
Payments Belgium
European bank wallet for instant euro transfers and online checkout Alternative to PayPal.
Details
Wero is an account-to-account wallet run by EPI Company SE in Brussels. It moves euros between bank accounts over SEPA instant payments, so a transfer lands in seconds with no card network in between. Most people use it inside their own bank’s app, from the Sparkassen and Volksbanken to ING, BNP Paribas, KBC, bunq and Revolut, and the bank is then the contracting party. Customers of Deutsche Bank, Postbank, norisbank and La Banque Postale use EPI’s standalone Wero app, whose terms apply the law of the user’s country of residence. EPI reports 60 million users.
Sending money to a phone number, email address or QR code is free for consumers and live in Belgium, France, Germany and Luxembourg, where Wero replaced Payconiq in September 2026. The Netherlands is moving iDEAL onto it, with iDEAL due to end in 2027. Online checkout is live in Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg and rolling out in France; merchants include Decathlon, dm, Lidl and Eventim, with Air France and Fnac Darty adopting it. In-store payment exists in Belgium and Luxembourg, and EPI plans it for France and Germany from 2027.
Against PayPal the gaps are scope and protection. Wero works only in euros and only in its four countries, and it has no card or credit option. Its purchase-dispute scheme, introduced in 2026, covers online purchases only and excludes not-received and not-as-described claims for accounts at most French banks and at all Luxembourg banks. Links to Bizum, MB WAY, Bancomat and Vipps MobilePay are planned through the European Network for Payments.
