European alternatives to PayPal

For a merchant, PayPal is two things at once. It is an acquirer and hosted checkout that takes cards and bank payments with no monthly fee and essentially no onboarding friction, and it is a consumer wallet whose account base makes the PayPal button a conversion feature rather than only a cost line.

That second half is what makes it hard to replace. A European alternative can match the processing, the local payment methods and often the price, but it cannot hand a shopper an account they already have and already trust. Buyer protection works the same way: it is a reason shoppers choose the button, and it sits outside the acquiring relationship.

PayPal Holdings, Inc. is headquartered in San Jose, California and listed on Nasdaq as PYPL. European merchants contract with PayPal (Europe) S.a r.l. et Cie, S.C.A., a Luxembourg-licensed bank supervised by the CSSF, which is a subsidiary of the US parent.
