European alternatives to Twilio Messaging

Twilio Messaging is the programmable-messaging half of Twilio: REST APIs that send and receive SMS, MMS, WhatsApp, and RCS, plus phone numbers, short codes, and the Verify API for one-time passcodes. It is sold per message with a credit card and no sales call, which is how it became the default way a developer adds a text message to an application.

What makes it hard to leave is rarely the API itself — a send endpoint is a send endpoint. It is everything underneath: the phone numbers and short codes registered to your Twilio account, the US A2P 10DLC brand and campaign registrations tied to them, the WhatsApp Business sender approved through Twilio, and the sender reputation built up on those routes. Moving a number between providers is a porting process measured in weeks, and the compliance registrations do not port with it. Applications also tend to accumulate Twilio-shaped logic — status callbacks, Messaging Services, subaccount structure — that has no identical counterpart elsewhere.

Twilio Inc. is a US public company headquartered in San Francisco. European alternatives differ mainly in where the contract and the data sit: Sinch and LINK Mobility both contract through European entities under European law, and both operate their own carrier interconnects in Europe. The trade is a thinner SDK and documentation ecosystem, and in LINK’s case a signed order form in place of a credit card.
